Michael, Trevor, and Franklin are still some of the most recognizable characters in the series, so it is no surprise that their possible return keeps coming up as GTA 6 gets closer to release. With Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look scheduled for August 27, the question is attracting even more attention.

The important thing is to separate what Rockstar has actually shown from what fans hope will happen. At the moment, none of the three has been officially announced for GTA 6.

Are Michael, Trevor and Franklin in GTA 6?

As of August 2026, Rockstar has not revealed Michael De Santa, Trevor Philips, or Franklin Clinton as part of the GTA VI cast.

The official GTA VI material currently introduces Jason and Lucia as the central protagonists and presents a new group of characters connected to Leonida, including Brian Heder, Cal Hampton, Boobie Ike, Dre'Quan Priest, Real Dimez, and Raul Bautista. Will Michael Be in GTA 6?

Michael De Santa is probably the easiest of the three to imagine returning. His story ended with him alive if players chose the Deathwish ending, and later GTA Online content reinforced that outcome rather than treating Michael's death as the definitive version of the story.

In The Contract, Franklin refers to a movie producer at the studio, a detail widely understood as a reference to Michael. That matters because Michael's dream at the end of GTA V was to move into film production. More recently, a rumor spread after Michael's actor, Ned Luke, responded to a post about a possible GTA 6 return with “Wouldn't that be nice?” Some fans treated the response as confirmation, but it was not. The claim was later checked and found to have been inflated into something Luke had never actually announced.

So while Michael is still alive within the established GTA Online timeline, that is not evidence that Rockstar has brought him into GTA VI.

Is Trevor Going to Be in GTA 6?

Trevor's situation is a little different because his actor, Steven Ogg, has openly discussed the possibility of bringing the character back.

Ogg once suggested a very Trevor-like idea for a cameo: Rockstar could bring him into GTA VI briefly and kill him off almost immediately. It is an entertaining hypothetical, but it came from Ogg discussing what he would find amusing, not from Rockstar revealing anything about the game. 

There is another reason the character remains relevant to fans: later GTA Online updates treated Trevor as alive after GTA V's story. That, along with Michael's continued presence in the online timeline, helped establish the Deathwish ending as the version of GTA V's events that the wider HD Universe continued from.

But none of that means Trevor is appearing in GTA 6.

Trevor remains a possibility discussed by fans and his actor, not an announced returning character.

Will Franklin Be in GTA 6?

Franklin has perhaps the strongest post-GTA V connection of the three because Rockstar already gave him a major continuation in GTA Online: The Contract.

Franklin's GTA Online storyline is proof that Rockstar was willing to revisit the character. It is not proof that Shawn Fonteno is returning for GTA VI, and Rockstar has not announced Franklin as part of the game's cast.

So for now, Franklin is also unconfirmed for GTA 6.

Why Do Fans Expect GTA V Characters to Return?

The speculation is not completely random.

GTA IV, GTA V, GTA Online, and GTA VI all belong to the same HD Universe, so references to previous characters can exist without those characters becoming part of the new game's main story. Rockstar can acknowledge an old character through a radio broadcast, a business, a news report, an Easter egg, or a brief appearance without changing who the protagonists are.

There is also the simple fact that Michael, Trevor, and Franklin are huge parts of GTA history. A short appearance from any one of them would instantly become one of the most discussed moments in the game.

That makes the theory believable enough to discuss, but not strong enough to present as fact.

A character's existence in the same universe is one thing. A confirmed role in GTA VI is another.

Is GTA V's Ending C Canon?

This is an important detail when discussing possible returns.

GTA V gives Franklin three choices at the end of the story: kill Trevor, kill Michael, or choose Deathwish, also known as Ending C, and save both of them. Subsequent GTA Online content established the third outcome as the version the wider HD Universe continued from. That means Michael, Trevor, and Franklin can all be treated as alive in the established post-GTA V timeline.

It is an important distinction, because otherwise people sometimes assume that Rockstar has to ignore two of the three endings depending on which character they want to bring back. In practice, the later GTA Online continuity already gives us a working timeline in which all three survived.

That still says nothing about whether any of them will travel from Los Santos to Leonida.

Could Michael, Trevor or Franklin Appear as Cameos?

Yes, there is room for that possibility, especially in a game as large as GTA VI.

A returning character would not necessarily need to become a protagonist again. Rockstar could use Michael in a minor story role, bring Franklin in for a short appearance, reference Trevor through another character, or simply include a small Easter egg that acknowledges what happened in Los Santos.

The problem is that there is currently no evidence strong enough to tell us which, if any, of those things will happen.

That is why actor interviews and social media posts need to be read carefully. An actor saying they would enjoy returning is interesting, but it is not the same as saying they have recorded scenes for GTA VI.

What About Other GTA Characters Returning?

The discussion also extends beyond Michael, Trevor, and Franklin.

Fans have suggested returning characters such as Lester Crest, Lamar Davis, and others from the HD Universe. Some recent community coverage has even tried to rank which familiar faces seem most plausible. Those lists are useful for seeing where the fandom's attention is going, but they are still predictions rather than Rockstar announcements.

The same rule applies to characters who have already appeared in GTA Online. Franklin's role in The Contract is official, but that does not create an automatic connection to GTA VI.

Until Rockstar identifies a returning character, the safest approach is to keep these theories separate from the confirmed cast.
