CONNECTING TO ROCKSTAR SERVERS...

Rumors claim GTA 6 could take up 300GB or more of storage. Here is the truth behind the Reddit speculation, realistic file size estimates, and how much space you should clear on PS5 and Xbox before launch.
The storage size of Grand Theft Auto VI has not been confirmed by Rockstar. Right now, the hot debate is just how big GTA 6 is actually going to be, and how many games we will have to delete to get it onto our consoles. Every figure floating around, whether it is 120GB, 200GB, 300GB, or even a wild 750GB claim from an untraceable screenshot, comes from fans doing math on old Rockstar games, not from Rockstar itself.
These guesses will not stop until the game ships on November 19, 2026. Here is what those estimates are actually built on, and how much space you should clear regardless of which number turns out to be right. If you want the complete picture on confirmed launch details, read our GTA 6: Everything we know so far guide.
The 300GB rumor started gaining traction across Reddit and social media after a deleted February 2024 post from an account called GTAVIbestleaks, which showed an unverified screenshot. While gaming outlets covered the claim at the time, it was always unconfirmed, and Rockstar never addressed it. Another rumor claimed the game would hit 750GB, but players quickly dismissed that since it is larger than a standard PS5 or Xbox Series S drive can physically hold.

The conversation has not gone away, it just shifted. In recent Reddit discussions on r/GTA6 that were later reported on by ScreenRant, players started estimating the size by comparing it to Red Dead Redemption 2. Most comments landed between 200GB and 250GB, arguing that GTA 6's scope should naturally make it bigger than RDR2's 150GB footprint. Others pushed back, pointing out that GTA 6 is built for fast SSDs from the ground up, which eliminates the need to duplicate game data the way older titles did. That group estimated closer to 140GB to 170GB.
Neither side knows for sure. What we do know is that when a game is finalized for digital or physical release, as we broke down in our GTA 6 Pre-Order Guide: Physical vs Digital Editions, modern compression tools significantly shrink raw files before they hit your console.
The safest way to make an educated guess is looking at Rockstar's recent track record:
Red Dead Redemption 2: Sits at around 150GB on PC and roughly 110GB to 120GB on consoles. This is the fairest baseline we have, since it is Rockstar's most recent massive single-player world.
Grand Theft Auto V: GTA 5 launched in 2013 at just a fraction of that size. While it takes up around 120GB today, that number only grew after more than a decade of GTA Online updates. GTA 6 will not ship with 10 years of online content on day one, so comparing it directly to GTA 5's current install size is misleading.
Somewhere between RDR2's 150GB and the community's 200GB to 250GB estimate is the most reasonable expectation right now.
Keep in mind that Rockstar has not officially confirmed a PC version yet, which we are tracking over in our guide on whether GTA 6 will be on PC. Any PC-specific file size or hardware leaks you see online are guessing at a version that does not officially exist yet.
This is the one practical question you can solve right now, no matter what number Rockstar announces:
Original PlayStation 5: Comes with an 825GB drive, but only leaves about 667GB of usable storage after system files.
PS5 Slim & PS5 Pro: Feature a 1TB drive with roughly 842GB of usable storage.
Xbox Series X: Offers roughly 802GB of usable space out of its 1TB SSD.
Xbox Series S: Has the tightest squeeze by far, leaving only about 364GB of usable space on the base 512GB model.

Because RDR2 needs 150GB and community expectations for GTA 6 sit around 200GB to 250GB, clearing at least 250GB of free space before pre-loads begin is the smartest move. If your drive is already full, picking up an internal NVMe SSD for PS5 or an expansion card for Xbox now will save you a headache on launch week.
Is GTA 6 really 300GB?
Not confirmed. The 300GB figure comes from an unverified screenshot in a deleted 2024 post. Most community estimates land lower, between 150GB and 250GB.
How many GB will GTA 6 take?
Rockstar has not published an official file size. Looking at Red Dead Redemption 2 and modern SSD compression, a range of 150GB to 250GB is the most realistic estimate.
Will GTA 6 be over 200GB?
It could be. It sits near the top end of community estimates, but nothing is confirmed until Rockstar shares official pre-load details.
Will GTA 6 need 32GB RAM?
There is no way to know. Rockstar has not announced PC system requirements or even confirmed a day-one PC launch. Any RAM numbers online right now are pure guesses.
How many GB will GTA 6 be on PS5 versus Xbox Series X?
Rockstar has not shared platform breakdowns. Historically, console file sizes across PlayStation and Xbox stay very close to each other.
There is no official file size yet. The best approach is to plan around what the evidence supports: 150GB on the low end and 250GB on the high end. Clear around 250GB on your console before pre-loads go live, and you will be completely ready for day one.
